Norfolk State University Director of Athletics Melody Webb announced the hiring of Angie Nicholson as Norfolk State's softball head coach on Wednesday morning.
Nicholson recently concluded her third season as the head coach at Georgia State. Prior to GSU, Nicholson spent five years in the same capacity at Hampton.
"We are tremendously excited to welcome Angie Nicholson to our Norfolk State family as our head softball coach," Webb said. "With a distinguished resume, including a spectacular record in the MEAC, she has lifted multiple Division I programs to unprecedented heights through her knowledge, commitment, and work ethic. I look forward to the Norfolk State community embracing Coach Nicholson and the promising future ahead for Spartan softball!"
Nicholson has 24 years of coaching experience, joining Norfolk State to build on an abundance of success at the Division I level.
Nicholson also coached at Ursuline College and Cuyahoga Community College.
While at Georgia State University, Nicholson led her team to their first win over a ranked opponent since 2018 with the 4-1 win over No. 22 ranked Louisiana Cajuns in 2022.
In that season, the Panthers broke their school's stolen base record swiping 121 bases across 54 games.
Nicholson is no stranger to the MEAC, serving as the head coach at Hampton University from 2016-21. She led the Pirates to a MEAC regular season title in 2017, going 17-1 in conference play.
"I am beyond excited to get back to the 757 area and lead NSU," Nicholson said. "I want to thank AD Webb for this wonderful opportunity and for her trust and belief in me to transform this program and reach its full potential!"
Prior to her stint at Hampton, Nicholson spent three seasons as the head coach at Eastern Illinois. The Panthers amassed 38 wins in 2014, as Nicholson went 84-71 during her time at EIU.
Spending seven years as the head coach at Cleveland State, Nicholson helped to build the Vikings program into a powerhouse program in the Horizon League. Accumulating a 211-152 mark during the stretch, she was named Horizon League Coach of the Year two times – in 2008 and 2010.
In 2010, Cleveland State won a school-record 44 games, including a record 22 games in conference play.
As a player, Nicholson was an all-conference and all-academic performer at Cleveland State in 1999 and 2000.
